Stevie (b. 2002) is a London-based painter from Aotearoa (New Zealand). At the age of 10, she began teaching herself to paint - closed in her room, surrounded by the vapours of methylated spirits, she should lose herself in miniature oil portraits on dry greasy unprimed paper. Her self-training was initially inspired by masters like Rembrandt, as well as digitial artists such as Lois Van Baarle. Over time, she became obsessed with the nature of reality and the challenge of capturing it. Now, her bold, immersive paintings pull the audience into intimate, bright spaces of connection and community.
Her tender piece After Dinner (2024) embodies her recurring themes of girlhood and intimacy, while Creeping In (2024) incorporating text into oil painting - blends her signature figurative work with a more private, abstract style.
"The urge to take a photo of a moment between friends in the same urge which inspires me to paint. Its a need to show, exhibit, display the people around me."
Caterina Biondi
